Ok, so I have filed a complaint with the NC state attorney general, which prompted a phone call from a slightly more informed net 10 representative.

That person did confirm that the message came from Net10’s parent company Tracfone, and that there was no browser update. He informed me that my number has been removed and that I should not receive any further messages.

I informed him that my concern was that they were using a false pretext to get people to click on a link, which is likely generating affiliate revenue for them, at the expense of my time.

He asked to speak with someone who has more information about this, and call me back. He did so about 20 minutes latter, however had nothing to add other than something to the effect: Our marketing department decides how to send the text messages, this was likely an ad for saving $5 by signing up for auto-refill.

This explanation is obviously absurd, the link did not display an advertisement for saving $5, it took me to a search engine. In either case, the text message’s statement that my “…phone’s browser requires an update” is clearly false (as he admitted), nefarious and puts Net10 squarely on the side of the bad guys.

I told him that I was not satisfied with his explanation and asked to speak with someone who could explain why the text message pretext was false. He refused to let me, so I informed him that I will contact the State Attorney General’s office again.

One little voice is unlike to bring about substantial retribution for this unethical business practice, if you contact your state attorney general, and the FCC too, it might help. I promise, it’s easy.
