Calling/Texting Canada without a smartphone

I recently purchased the ILD $65 monthly and I'm only trying to make calls and send texts to Canada. It keeps referring me to a smart phone app but I have a regular phone. How do I send a text message to someone in Canada? Is there an easier way to make a phone call? As it is I have to use two numbers which is a bit of a hassle.
